Jeffrey Thostenson (1955-2012) is Mount Vernon City Library’s featured community artist for September. Jeff was a voracious reader and a longtime library patron. He spent long hours in the La Conner Memorial Library and the Mount Vernon City Library pouring over art books and periodicals, reading thrillers, and searching out obscure mystical religious writings.
 
His painting are abstract- acrylics on paper or woods. A percentage of the profists made from the sale of his paintings will be generously donated to the new library project.
 
Thostenson’s work will be displayed in the library’s art gallery throughout the month of September.
 
Members of his surviving family will be joining us on Thursday, September 5th from 5-8 p.m. for the artwalk and to discuss his life and work. 

A Downton Abbey Celebration

A Downton Abbey Celebration

The Mount Vernon City Library requests the pleasure of your company at a Downton Abbey Celebration. There will be tea and refreshments provided by Old Town Grainery Tea Room, a trivia contest, themed activities and “What Did They Wear Under There?”, a presentation about the clothing of the post-Victorian era by hobbyist costumer, Alisa Kester. Frank Simpson, Director of the Meerkerk Rhododendron Gardens, will talk about how to grow and care for our state flower. He will cover varieties that are better suited for the home garden and how to incorporate them into a diverse landscape.

Carlos Gil

From Mexican to Mexican-American: A Family Immigration Story

Tuesday, September 24 at 6:30 p.m.

Professor Carlos Gil sought to understand immigration by tracing his family’s history from the 1920s to the 1970s. In the process, he discovered the excitement, culture shock, inter-family conflict, and questions of identity that many immigrants face when seeking a better life in another country. Based on his book, “We Became Mexican-American: How Our Immigrant Family Survived to Pursue the American Dream,” this talk explores Mexican immigration by spotlighting his own family’s experience in southern California, including parallels with Washington State.


There will be bilingual storytime and crafts for children during this program.
