New Year New Fire

Since 2016, every year has been called a "dumpster fire of a year" by someone I know. A trend that has grown so big that now in many communities across the US, you can literally attend a real New Year's Eve dumpster fire to burn your divorce papers, bills, failed resolutions, or really any worldly grievance that is written on a piece of paper. The fire marks the ever-rising watermark of horrible things in this world.

Libraries, of course, are places of hope. So, every year when news of this challenging year rolls in, I find myself in a bit of disbelief. Sure, like all of you, I am aggrieved by misdirections in the world's course, but I also believe in our power to change for the better. Every day, I see families connecting, students studying, people interviewing, and getting jobs. I see people creating compassion, community,  growth, and solutions to real-world problems.

So while others are welcome to fun watching a dumpster burn, I will huddle up with a good book as the year turns over. (If you're looking for a good book, some of the year-end staff picks are below.)

Sincerely,

Isaac

A HIGHWATER MOMENT

This year marked a true high-water moment for the Mount Vernon Library Foundation with the long-awaited completion of the Mount Vernon Library Commons—a space built for connection, learning, and community life. As we celebrate this milestone, we also face a $10,000 cut to the library’s programming budget, putting essential programs at risk. As we close out the year, your generous support can help bridge this gap and ensure the Commons remains vibrant, welcoming, and fully alive for everyone who depends on it.

dumpster fire
