The District and Police Department have enjoyed a long standing partnership that provides for a full-time police officer to serve at the middle school level. The intent was to ensure a safe environment for learning, offer mentoring opportunities to students, supplement classroom instruction for teachers and act as a liaison between students, teachers, parents and the criminal justice system.
Officer Jon Gerondale currently serves in this role. Before that, he spent over eight years as a Resource Officer for Kulshan Creek. He maintains an office at both campuses and divides his time based on the their needs and priorities.
Beyond serving in a crime prevention and response role, Officer Gerondale develops programs to engage students in civic related experiences, augments classroom instruction with specialized topics, works with parents and school administrative staff when truancy, school rule violations or crimes occur involving students.
Schools are communities within a community where students experience challenges that influence their upbringing. Addressing these challenges involves coordinated efforts among administrators, teachers, students, parents, and community-based stakeholders and the Middle School Resource Officer is a key figure.
