About the Academy
The purpose of the Academy is to encourage high school students to pursue policing as a career and to promote the Mount Vernon Police Department as the agency of choice.
The 2024 Academy will run in the last week of June. Academy hours are 8:00am - 5:00pm except for Thursday, the class hours will be 1:00pm - 9:00pm.
While attending the Academy, participants will:
- Learn what it takes to become a Police Officer
- Learn what it is like to be a Mount Vernon Police Officer
- Learn about the Mount Vernon Police Department
- Become familiar with the Department's policing philosophy
Taught By Police Officers
The classes are taught by Police Officers, Department personnel, and guest speakers. Topics include the Department's Vision, Mission, Goals, and Values; Hiring Process; Police Tactical Operations; Ethics; Use of Force; Criminal Investigations; Constitutional Law and more. Students ride along with a Police Officer while on patrol and participate in several hands-on activities. Upon completion of the Academy, a graduation ceremony will be held at the Mount Vernon Police Department.
