Winter Reading Challenge 2019

All Ages

Discover a love of reading this winter! We’re challenging everyone to read at least 600 minutes during the month of January - that’s only 20 minutes a day! Register and keep track of your minutes online at mountvernonwa.beanstack.org or pick up a paper reading log at the library.

Stories and activities to support and strengthen literacy skills in Spanish. For school age children.


STEAM Lab: Bread Lab
Tuesday, January 22
4 - 5 p.m.
Recommended for ages 6-10

Come learn about food literacy with Kim Binczewski, Managing Director of the WSU Bread Lab in Burlington, WA. Kim will share her new book, “Bread Lab” and lead kids in a sensory activity involving samples of wheat, barley, rye plants, seeds, and samples of bread.


DIY Dog and Cat Collars
Thursday, January 17
4 - 5 p.m.
Ages 10+

Every animal needs a collar! Design dog and cat collars that will be donated to the Humane Society of Skagit Valley. Please bring an old pair of jeans and/or and old t-shirt. Each teen/pre-teen who participates will receive 1 hour of community service.

Ages 10+

Storytimes Resume Tuesday, January 8 

Storytime is an opportunity for parents to introduce their children to reading and language in a fun way. At Storytime, children have an opportunity to do activities that promote development and learning. See a list of our storytimes here. 



Tales for Tails 
First Saturday of the Month 
1-2 p.m.

Dogs on Call, an all-volunteer organization of certified therapy dogs, presents this reading program for reluctant readers (and readers who just love dogs). Reading to dogs helps put kids at ease and makes reading more enjoyable. Recommended for ages 6-12.



LEGO Building 
Wednesdays from 3-7:30 p.m.
Saturdays from 2-4:30 p.m.

We supply the LEGOs, you bring your imagination.  All ages welcome. 




K’NEX Building
Thursdays from 3 - 7:30 p.m.
Ages 3+

Kids ages 3 and up can put their building creativity to work on our new budding builder and model building K’NEX sets.



Play and Learn
Fridays and Saturdays from 10-11:30 a.m.

Drop-in for self-guided kindergarten readiness activities for caregivers and children to explore together.

Do you have a collection you would like to display at the library in one of our two display cases? Sign-up!




Birthday Club 


Get a birthday present from the Library! Visit the birthday bulletin board next time you come to the Library. Children ages 1 to 14 years may join the Birthday Club by filling out a form with their name, age, birthday and favorite book. During your birthday month, we will display your form on our bulletin board. You may pick up a birthday present from the Youth Services desk any time during that month. The Birthday Club is sponsored by the Mount Vernon Red Apple Market, and the Mount Vernon City Library.
