Asking for a Public Defense Attorney

If you cannot pay for an attorney you can ask to have one appointed. There are two ways to ask for an attorney:
  1. On your court date go to the Mount Vernon Municipal Court at 1805 Continental Place in Mount Vernon. This office is open from 8:30-noon and 1:00–4:30 ONLY on court days. Court days are every Tuesday of every month. You do not need an appointment. There is no charge for this.
  2. Before your court date you may call the City of Mount Vernon Public Defense Screening number at 360-399-3630 at any time to hear about ways to be screened before your court date. You can also leave a message at this number and the screener will call you back.
